Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistols for sale at a shop in California. Photo: Bing Guan/Bloomberg NewsA group of activist nuns filed an unusual shareholder lawsuit to pressure gun maker Smith & Wesson to drastically change the way it markets, makes and sells its popular version of the AR-15 rifle. The so-called shareholder derivative action, which the nuns filed in Nevada state court Tuesday against publicly traded Smith & Wesson, alleges that company leaders are putting shareholders at risk. They argue the leaders are exposing the company to liability by the way they have made and sold the rifle, which has been used in several mass shootings in recent years.

PLYMOUTH, Mass.—The Pilgrims gathered more than four centuries ago for a harmonious feast that would be known as America’s first Thanksgiving. Today, the organization dedicated to their memory is locked in a stormy legal battle with a descendant. Like most family feuds, it’s awkward: No one really knows how it got so ugly, and so far no one is saying sorry. Pass the stuffing.

Police are still searching for the Lewiston shooter who killed 18 people on Wednesday. Photo: Ashley L. Conti for The Wall Street JournalThis week’s mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine has drawn new attention to a unique state law designed to prevent such tragedies. Maine’s measure, the only one in the nation known as a “yellow flag” law, was passed in 2019. It is a narrower version of “red flag” laws on the books in 21 states that allow authorities to temporarily seize guns from people who pose a danger to themselves or others.

Former President Donald Trump is facing four separate indictments at both state and federal levels. WSJ breaks down each of the indictments and what they mean for his 2024 presidential campaign. Ellis agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for a sentence that avoids jail time. Her decision to cooperate could be particularly harmful to Rudy Giuliani , another former lawyer for Trump who crisscrossed the country with Ellis in late 2020 promoting baseless voter fraud theories. Giuliani, Trump and the other 13 co-defendants without plea deals earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, including racketeering.

Jenna Ellis, a lawyer who advised Donald Trump during his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, pleaded guilty in the Georgia election interference case on Tuesday. Photo: John Bazemore/AFP/Getty ImagesATLANTA—Lawyer Jenna Ellis became Tuesday the third legal adviser to plead guilty in the Georgia racketeering case involving Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, marking a blow to the former president’s defense and raising pressure on other loyalists to cut deals with the district attorney. Trump and 18 co-conspirators, including eight lawyers, were charged with participating in a criminal enterprise to subvert Joe Biden’s victory. A trial date hasn’t been scheduled, but a flurry of commitments to cooperate obtained by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis shows she is homing in on those who gave Trump legal advice in the months after the election.

In December 2005, five groups of Wall Street investors flew in private jets to Portland, Maine, where they took waiting limousines to a warren of metal buildings that resembled a midsize lumberyard. They had come to Bushmaster Firearms in pursuit of a highly profitable product whose market was growing faster than any other in America’s stagnant gun industry. The product was the AR-15, and red-hot Bushmaster, the nation’s leading manufacturer of the rifle, had decided to auction itself to the highest bidder.

Stephen King’s new novel, “Holly,” is his sixth book to feature the private investigator Holly Gibney, who made her debut as a mousy side character in the 2014 novel “Mr. Along the way, he also tells a dad joke, remembers his friend Peter Straub, and discusses his views on writing and life. “Writing is partially an escape valve, but it’s also a way of understanding what’s going on in your life and what’s going on in a particular story. Those things are part of the reason to write at all, I think,” King says. “I don’t think you should think a lot about the act of writing as you write, because I think that’s counterproductive.
